Reminder to register for Regional meetings

My dear Sisters in Christ,

Time is rapidly approaching for the first of our Regional Meetings. There will be three meetings: January 30 (for members in the southern part of our Assembly), February 13th (middle part of our Assembly), and February 27th (northern part of our Assembly). In this manner, we will be able to fellowship with those Daughters in closer proximity to each other and be inclusive of our Daughters-at-Large. I realize the particular Saturday meeting for your area may not be convenient in which case I would encourage you to attend any meeting that works in to your schedule. We want as much participation as possible and this is your time to share your successes and concerns with others. Meetings will begin at 9:30 am with a time of fellowship followed by a devotion and prayer with Chaplain Janet Echols. There will be a short time for the business of the Assembly and the remainder of the meeting will be a time for sharing. It is my hope the meetings will conclude by lunch time.

As this is a Zoom format, registration will be necessary to protect the security and integrity of the gatherings.  Please register online at our Assembly website, www.doksc.org  Once you are registered you will receive an email with the sign-in information for your particular session.

I pray you are all well and safe.  I look forward to sharing time with each of you.

FHS,

Kester Heaton

In closing I leave you with this anonymous piece I saw on the internet that sums up our lives quite nicely.  Ladies (and gentlemen); Welcome aboard Flight #2021. We are preparing for an on-time departure into the New Year. Please make sure your Attitude and Actions are secured and locked in an upbeat & right position. All self-destructive thoughts should be turned off at this time and remain off forever. Any negativity, hate and discouragement must remain completely stowed. In the likely event we lose Altitude while under pressure, simply reach up and pull down a Prayer. Prayers will automatically activate if you have Faith. With this Faith you will be able to assist other passengers. There will be NO BAGGAGE allowed on this flight. The Captain (GOD of course) has cleared us for takeoff. Our first destination is Love with continuing stops at Peace and Joy. Before you deplane make sure you don’t leave any of your Hopes and Dreams behind. Once these are lost, they can not be reclaimed. If there’s anything we can do to make your flight more enjoyable, please do the same by paying it forward. We wish you a pleasant flight! Have a Happy New Year!!! Let’s put 2020 behind us!!!! Make It a Better 2021!

A note from Kester

My Dear Sisters in Christ,

Thanksgiving blessings to you and your families. I pray you are all safe and healthy. This Sunday also begins our new liturgical year and the being of Advent. What a time of anticipation as we look forward to the heart of Christmas and a new year. We have much to be thankful for and much to pray for.

A few things to put on your calendar before the holidays and new year sweep us away. We will be having Regional Meetings on January 30, February 13 and 27. We had three Chapters lovingly come forward to host these meetings but under the current health advisories we have elected to do these via Zoom. I truly regret we will not be able to meet in person and fellowship. More information will follow on these after the holidays.

Our Spring Assembly is scheduled for March 5,6, 2021 We will be gathering on Zoom. Please see the Assemblies Calendar.

Triennial in Baltimore, Maryland, has been postponed until 2022.

Fall Assembly 2021 will be September 11, at Camp St. Christopher.

Please continue to keep our President, Mary Rife-Boynton, in your prayers for recovery and healing and for her family as they support that effort.

Blessings to you all in this season.

Providence IV report

October 14, 2020

Dear Sisters-in-Christ,

Ever have a function or meeting that seemed to stretch your endurance and mess with your schedule and life?  Last week for four days the Province IV Fall Assembly was conducted from 10:00 – 1:00 and reconvened at 2:00 – sometimes after 5:00.  Thankfully we were able to get up as we needed, to move around, simply shutting down the camera on the computer without leaving the proceedings.  At one time there were as many as 149 of us linked together via the Zoom meeting on our computers.  Province IV represents 46% of the members of The Daughters of the King in the U.S.   I say this just to let you know it was no picnic or easy commitment, YET when we had completed and adjourned, I was sad and felt like crying because I have missed being with this dedicated group of Daughters.  It was just as sad saying goodbye to everyone as if we had been together in person with family.  It was a taste of the joy of fellowship we experience when we gather with other Daughters of the King committed to our mission of prayer, service and evangelism.  There were other Daughters from our Assembly that registered and participated and I thank each of you for being there, I’ve missed your smiling faces!  Thank all of you for allowing me to represent our Assembly as your president.

All that being said, let me tell you it was worth it!!  From the call to order by Jane Searcy, Province IV President, to the meditations and worship with Bishop Skilton, and the keynote speaker Rev. Michael Sullivan, President of the Board of Directors at Kanuga, it was worth it.  Since we were unable to gather together at Kanuga as usual, many people had scenes around Kanuga as the backdrops to their camera picture. It was the next best thing to being there…

The entire proceedings were recorded so check it out on the Province IV website.  The three talks by Rev. Michael would make great viewing at any of your chapter meetings. One of the workshops on mandalas was presented by Nancy Rodriguez, St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

During the final business meeting, our own Kathy House from St. John’s, Florence was elected incoming President for Province IV and Rev. Janet Echols, St. Matthew’s, Ft. Mott was elected DAL Representative to the next Triennial.

On September 19 our own Assembly held our annual Fall Assembly meeting via Zoom.  I was pleased to see there were more registered to attend via Zoom than have been to our Fall Assembly in the last years in person, in as much there was no travel involved and you could attend in your PJ’s if you so choose.  Our thanks to our speaker, Rev. Sandi Kerner, Chaplain, St. Christopher prayer Center for inspiring us following morning prayer worship with Rev. Janet Echols.  Officers for the next triennium elected during the business meeting were:  Kester Heaton, President, Sparkie Sparks, 1st Vice President, Dawn Lee Schaeperkoetter, 2nd Vice President and Bonnie Knight, Treasurer.  These officers will be installed at the Fall Assembly 2021 following the Triennial next summer in Baltimore.  At the present time it is not decided if the Triennial will be held in person or virtual, information to follow ASAP.

It was my joy several weeks ago to present their crosses to five precious, new Jr. Daughters at Old St. Andrew’s Church in Charleston. The Sr. chapter at Old St. Andrew’s had earlier during COVID-19 isolation installed five new senior Daughters.  It is such a pleasure to share in the health and growth of The Daughters of the King in our S.C. Assembly.  If your chapter is planning an installation please let us know so that we may celebrate with you!

I pray that all of you and your families, and church families are staying safe and practicing good safety measures during this time of uncertainty.  Updated information for our calendar of events will be made available as soon as locations and dates for our Regional meetings has been confirmed.

Lord, bless the precious sister that is reading this.  Guide, protect and bless her so that she may continue to serve you and become all you would have her to be in Christ.

Blessings and FHS,

Mary

Lord, what would you have me do, Poem by Susan Keith October 8 ,2020

If you missed the Providence IV Zoom retreat, this was shared

For His Sake…

Not for mine

Not for yours

But for the sake of the one who commissioned us.

I am but one.

One of many

Part of a community

Part of the team.

But I am one.

The community is incomplete without me

I matter

Actually I am essential.

I cannot do everything.

I cannot sing

I cannot run

I do not have many talents.

But I can do something.

while I can't sing, I can write.

I can do magic on a computer.

I can make order out of multitudes of details.

What I can do, I ought to do.

My words should be "how can I help".

My thoughts should be " I wonder what I can do".

My response should be "May I offer my talents".

What I ought to do, by the grace of God

Is be present

Is to say " I am available. "

Is to step forward to take up the slack.

Lord, what will you have me do?

I will share my stories to encourage others.

I will take your hand in invitation.

I will cry with you and pray for you.

I will laugh with you and give thanks for God's blessings.

September 11th 2001

Dear God, we remember before you today those whose lives were lost in the catastrophic events of September 11, 2001, and for all those whom we love but no longer see. We give thanks to you for the selfless courage of those brave souls who ran into burning buildings and who labored in the rubble; may their courage be to us a witness of what is possible when we are guided by love and dedication to our fellow human beings. We pray today for the continued healing of all those suffering emotional and physical scars. May your spirit breathe new breath into clouded lungs, new life into troubled minds, and new warmth into broken hearts, so that all may feel wrapped in your loving embrace. May we move from suffering to hope, from brokenness to wholeness, from anxiety to courage, from death to life, from fear to love, and from despair to hope. Guide our feet into the way of peace. Inspire us with hope in the gift of love. May we receive this gift, so that we might become instruments of your peace in this world, knowing all people as equally loved, lovingly created, children of God.

Amen.

PRESIDENT
Kester Heaton

To everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven…Ecclesiastes 3:3

I was born in Worcester, Mass and raised as an Air Force brat, spent my formative years in Lexington, Mass.  I graduated from Lexington High School and went on to Westbrook College in Portland, Maine majoring in Medical Technology.

In 1967 I moved back to the Boston area and went to work at MIT in the Instrumentation Labs on the Apollo Space program.  It was there I met my husband (Lance) who was an electrical aeronautical engineer on the guidance and navigation system for Apollo.  We were married in 1972.

Shortly thereafter and 2 children later we elected to become “back to the landers”.  We bought a 125 acre farm in Pittsfield, Maine, birthed three more children, had 50 head of Hereford beef cattle, an enormous vegetable garden, and a plethora of small animals.  I was very active in the community and was Senior Warden at my local Episcopal mission and served on the altar guild.  I served as School Board Chairman for 6 years, president of the local  volunteer ski club and sat as a trustee at our private boarding school (Maine Central Institute).

Lance and I moved to the Charleston area in 1998 following the successful graduation of our youngest from MCI and completion of his freshman year at Norwich University. We immediately became involved in both the Cathedral Church of St  Luke and St.Paul and their active ministry with St Alban’s ministry at The Citadel, where our son Dave was a sophomore. At the Cathedral I served on the Vestry, Altar Guild and as Parish Administrator.  Active in the Women’s ministries, I served as Chapter president and President of the Executive Board.

In 2001 I was invited to join the Daughters of the King in the St Cecelia Chapter and served as President until the Chapter became in active due to attrition.  As a Daughter at Large I served the Assembly Board as Recording Secretary, DAL Chair Person, 1st Vice President and was elected as Provincial IV DAL delegate for the 2018 Triennial in Austin, TX.

God has guided me through many seasons of spiritual growth as I continue my journey and He continues to open new doors and pathways Through the strength and prayers of many, may those journeys ever continue as I strive to serve all of you for His glory.

1st VICE PRESIDENT
Carolyn (Sparkie) Sparks

I have been a Daughter for over 20 years, am a United States Marine, and an Episcopalian by choice and the grace of God.   I am currently a member of St Francis Episcopal Church in West Ashley.  I have always been very active in a number of areas of parish life and community ministries over the years.  Currently I am a Lay Reader, Eucharistic Minister, Eucharistic Visitor, and publish the St Francis Weekly Email Newsletter.  I am the Chapter President as well as a Past President, Vice President, and Secretary of two Daughters of the King Chapters.
I am the Program Manager for a technology company with employees in Charleston, Norfolk, and New Orleans.
I believe the strength of the Daughters, individually and collectively, is love.  Our love for God and our love for each other.  When we approach all things with that love, that strength; there is nothing we cannot accomplish, no evil we cannot vanquish, no goal we cannot attain.
If I am given the privilege of serving as the Assembly 1st Vice President, I will put all of my knowledge, strength, and love into every task I am given, and will do my best to be available to each and every Daughter in my care.
All good things come from you, oh Lord.

2ND VICE PRESIDENT
 Dawn Schaeperkoetter

“I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” (ESV Phil. 4:13)
I am Dawn Schaeperkoetter, born and raised in New Jersey. I graduated from Metuchen High School in Metuchen, NJ, then graduated from Douglass College, the women’s college at Rutgers University, with my B.A. in English. After moving to Mt. Pleasant, SC, in 1983, I studied at The Citadel and earned my M.A.Ed. in English. I have been teaching since 1985, and I have been an English professor at Charleston Southern University since 1992. I retired early at the end of the spring semester 2020 after 28 years there.
I am an active member of the Order of the Daughters of the King, serving St. Paul’s Junia chapter as its president and in the SC Assembly of the DOK. I participate in the Women’s Bible Studies and Women’s Ministries, also serving on the Women’s Ministries Board for St. Paul’s. I also serve as a lay reader and lay Eucharist minister. I have served on the vestry at St. Paul’s, and Charlie and I have also been active with Alpha and Cusillo. Being involved in these ministries has enabled me to serve others, get deeply involved at St. Paul’s and with the SC Anglican Diocese and Assembly of DOK, and get to know my church and diocesan families.
Being involved has also deepened my faith, strengthened my walk with God, and enabled me to grow and serve Him in ways I never dreamed possible. I know my walk with Him is a life-long journey, and I am glad to be able to make this journey with all of you. It is my honor and pleasure to serve God and you. If elected, I would like to ask for your prayers for God to guide me as I serve. Thank you all for your support, and please know that I am at you service.

TREASURER
Bonnie Knight

I grew up in Sumter, SC where I was a member of The Church of the Holy Comforter.  I moved  to attend the College of Charleston and graduated with a degree in biology. I have been employed as an office manager in our family business for 33 years where I am fortunate to work with my dad and my son. I now live in Mt Pleasant and have attended the Church of the Holy Cross on Sullivan's Island for 26 years. I am in the traditional choir and am a member of the altar guild. I became a Daughter of the King in 2003 and am now a Daughter at Large. I have been the treasurer of the SC Assembly for the past 7 years and it is my honor and privilege to continue to serve. In my spare time I enjoy bike riding, walking on the beach, traveling and having fun with friends and family.
